Greybeard Promotions, Inc. and Chrome Auto Insurance are pleased to announce the winner of “The Crème de la Chrome Award”. “The Crème de la Chrome Award” was presented for the first time ever at the most notable indoor automotive event in the Rocky Mountain Region, The 15th Annual Rocky Mountain Rod & Custom Car Show. The annual event took place Thanksgiving weekend at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.
Over 150 vehicles competed for the award at The 15th Annual Rocky Mountain Rod and Custom Car Show. In the end, the Butterscotch Yellow 1932 Ford Three-Window Coupe owned by Phil and Deb Becker earned the prestigious award. The vehicle was built by Dave Lane of Fast Lane Hot Rod Shop in Donahue, Iowa. As the recipients of “The Crème de la Chrome Award”, Phil and Deb Becker earned a cash prize in the sum of $5,000. They also received national recognition, a 15th Annual Crème de la Chrome Rocky Mountain Rod and Custom Car Show winner’s jacket and the chance to be enshrined on a one-of-a-kind trophy, designed by fine automotive artist, Darrell Mayabb.
“The Crème de la Chrome Award” is sponsored by Chrome Auto Insurance and is what would be commonly referred to as “Best of Show”. The award was designed to recognize the dedicated individuals who take pride in the vehicles that they design, build, customize, restore and display. In addition to the prizes mentioned above, the recipient of the award will be forever enshrined on a piece of art for all to see. Once completed, the original trophy will stand nearly 8 feet tall. A “smaller” version (a one and only replica) will be produced each year, for the recipient to proudly display.

The ’32 Ford Three-Window Coupe took Lane nearly two years to build. The metal is coated in a custom DuPont single stage butterscotch yellow mix. The interior features a downsized vintage Porsche steering wheel, a redesigned ’34 Plymouth gauge panel and rich, dark chocolate leather upholstery, which was designed by Becker himself.
The engine is a 350 cubic-inch Chevy small block and the transmission is a Gearstar 700R4. The chassis, which was built by Fast Lane Rod Shop, features front and rear transverse leaf springs, hairpin front/ladder bar rear with RCD Bilstein shocks (front and back). The Dayton Wire wheels (front and back) were painted chocolate brown to match the interior. “We are honored to be the recipients of the first annual Crème de la Chrome Award,” said Phil Becker, recipient of the Crème de la Chrome Award. “Not only was this our first time visiting Denver, but it was our first time attending and competing in the Rocky Mountain Rod and Custom Car Show and we hope to come back next year.”
In addition to winning “The Crème de la Chrome Award” at The 15th Annual Rocky Mountain Rod and Custom Car Show, the ’32 Ford Three-Window Coupe has also earned the “Mother’s Choice Award” at SEMA, the “Builders Choice Pick” at Goodguys Indy, the “Street Rod of the Year” at Goodguys Nationals, “Street Rodder Top Ten Pick” at Goodguys Nationals and “Builders Choice Pick” at Goodguys Chicagoland. For more information about Greybeard Promotions, Inc. or the 15th

Many people collect classic cars and attempt to rebuild the cars or preserve them. However, few classic car owners are aware of the potentially hazardous toxins hidden in many of the automotive parts of older cars. It is important to be aware of the toxic material that older cars may contain and exercise the proper caution when working with these cars.

Asbestos has been commonly used as a component in the automotive industry, parts like clutch plates particularly in the production of brake pads. When brake pads wear down over time, the pad can begin to release dust particles that may contain asbestos. Exposure to asbestos can cause serious health problems that may lead to scarring of the lung tissue. Asbestos can also lead to a rare form of cancer known as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is an aggressive type of cancer that has a high death rate. It is important to wear protective gear to prevent exposure to asbestos.

Bromine is a toxic chemical that is often found in the interior of older cars. Classic cars that contain a significant amount of vinyl or plastic parts pose a particular risk. Car seats, seat belts, dashboards and seat covers are common sources of bromine in classic cars. Bromine exposure can lead to skin and mouth irritation. In severe cases, bromine can cause permanent breathing problems due to prolonged exposure to the substance.

Many classic car owners choose to repaint their car by hand. However, lead is a very common metal found in the exterior paint of many older cars. Car owners may be exposed to toxic lead when they repaint or strip the paint off the car. Lead exposure can cause serious health issues. Chronic exposure may lead to brain damage, infertility, nerve disorders and even death.

Classic cars may contain a multitude of toxic materials. Many automotive manufacturers were unaware of the health risks associated with asbestos, bromine and lead exposure. When working on an older car, it is essential to take proper safety measures. While the risk of exposure may be relatively low in most cases, wearing a respirator, safety goggles, gloves and disposing of contaminated clothing can further reduce any potential risks.
